Rocky’s 2nd Birthday and a lesson learnt

It was my dog’s, our male German Shepherd Rocky’s, second birthday and I was all set to make the day extra special for him! I have been trying to bake dog friendly cakes since last year and this time was no different.

How do you all think the cake turned out?

Yummy! It was a lovely morning. We had so much fun and best of all Rocky seemed to love all the love and pampering. I mean, who wouldn’t? At dinner, I prepared goat meat with rice and veggies. The monster gobbled it all in one go. He was so happy!

Things however took a turn the next day and Rocky seemed to have a bad tummy upset. We watched him for a while but eventually decided that it might be time to take him to the vet. Turns out it was all the love. Even though we are always very careful, it was still a changed diet which his little tummy was finding it hard to handle.

Lesson learnt

According to the vet, while changing food is ok you’d still want to make the change in small portions. For example, anything new should be added in small portions along with their regular food. The total quantity you are feeding them should remain the same.

This is also something you might want to keep in mind if you want to switch brands of food. With so many kibble brands available, you might want to spoil the little one at times. A vet might also suggest you switch to a different brand due to health, weight or another reason. This advice will come in handy.

You might also want to keep in mind that suddenly switching brands could hard your pet’s physical or mental well being. For example, a brand could potentially affect only a specific breed’s fur coat and make it dry, or give them itches and sometimes cause more severe issues like an ear infection.

Remember – When it’s time to change, go slow!

All’s well that ends well

Anyhoo, I was feeling quite guilty leaving the vet’s office. I mad sure that we followed all the instructions given by the vet and gave Rocky bland food (Rice + Chicken breast pieces + Pumpkin) for next few days along with meds.

In just a few days Rocky was back to his normal self. Phew, it was a big relief for us! We did observe that he had initially lost some weight but seems to be gaining it all back with those nice and hearty meals.

Note to self: Next time his birthday meals are king size chicken legs. No more experiments!

Well maybe a little…

Bow-wow folks! 🙂
